News Germany Surpasses US in Hop Production

Germany has again surpassed the US as the world’s top hop producing country, a title it lost nine years ago. Even though hop production fell in Germany last year, the decline in hop production was far greater in the US in 2023 versus the previous year.

The German area under hops cultivation declined by 840 acres to a total of 50,162 acres, whereas in the US, the total was 44,108 acres in 2023 after a decline of 11,120 acres.

According to the German Hop Growers’ Association there are 135,900 acres of hops grown globally. The Hallertau region of Bavaria is once again the largest hop-growing region in the world, while Washington state is the largest region in the US.

The overall decline is symbolic of the declining worldwide beer sales.
