View Full Version : Filtering and good head

I just bumped up my filter thickness and have noticed a loss of head retention.
Has this anything to do with the filtering process. or is it just my brews problem?

Any solutions. I just bought a huge amount of filter pads and it may take me a year to get through them all.

I noticed this because my porter (which I dont filter) has a wonderfull head and my other beers lose theirs in a few minutes.
Plus the beer isn't lacing like it was before.

Another thing it may be is the damn dishwasher at the bar.

But let me know if filtering will cause this.
Thanks

I spent three months at a brewery in Germany where they steril-filtered their beer to below .5 microns and their Pils had a beautiful, long-lasting head that laced to the bottom of the glass (as well as a nice hop nose and character) so I would argue that tight filtering does not remove any foam retention capabilities (or flavor and aroma) as some people will say. There's my two cents worth: hope it helps somewhat.

I think its the dishwasher after all, I went to another bar which sales my beer "just to see" I had good head after all.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
