There seem to be a lot of different types of Grundies out there. And the prices are pretty sweet. Are they all a mistake in the long run?

In my experience, the vessels are sound. However, I would highly recommend buying refurbished or refurbishing them before use. That is, get all new gaskets, put in a carbonation port, and exchange the grundy pressure relief/cip head system for a modern parts (information about this can be found on this thread http://www.probrewer.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=5724).
Otherwise, for serving vessels, they work great!
