Just a thought....

There have been instances where I will get copious amounts of settlement in my TDV overnight (only with heffes and wits). The first 5 pints look like milkshakes. I do rack off to a secondary, and I do let the beer condition for awhile. I was wondering if a perhaps a "partial filtration" would be the ticket to solving this. IOW, filter half of the beer (say, 3 Bbls), then run the next 3 unfiltered to maintain a traditional cloudy appearance (I am not interested in doing a Kristal Weiss, but thanks anyway.). Is this the proper solution, or am I missing something here (due to my lack of extensive formal training).

Also, can somebody toss in their $.02 on what the best malt is for adding proper color and flavor to a dunkel weisen? I normally use 20L Munich, but my distributor is out right now.
Thanks,
Jay

Personally i would steer away from any filtration on those styles. Do you have a side port on your BBT/TDV? What temp and how long are you conditioning in your FV, secondary?

We run our Hefe from the side port on the BBT, by the time we get down to the last few bbl's any yeast that has settled, we can blow off the bottom before switching to the bottom port. Also if you are not transferring from a racking arm you may need to dump more yeast off the cone, and possibly condition colder (i.e. 34°F) and or longer.

I would probably sub. Victory or Biscuit for a 20L Munich, maybe in combination or with a dash of a light crystal, but there are plenty of suppliers out there who could probably happily UPS you a bag of Dark Munich...my $0.02

install a standpipe in your bright beer tank...could be a simple as a piece of hose a couple of inches long. You just need to get up above the lees...
