I am currently reading Sam Calagione's book, Brewing Up a Business. There is another book I have seen on varous sites titled Starting Your Own Brewery. For the most part, the revues were lousy. Is anyone familiar with this book? Is is worth the effort and expense to read it?

Calagione's is a good motivational story but not real in depth when it comes to the business aspect. It's sort of half about starting a business and half about his story, I don't know I just found it more of a motivational book than anything. You didn't say you're specifically looking for business books so I will give you my one "must have" if you're a brewer. Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels. He breaks down a lot of homebrew recipes so you can't always go exactly by what he says but it has tons of great info on brewing different styles as a reference. I haven't read his book on starting a brewery but I would assume it's very good.

I have read both books.
Calagione's - is a pretty good read for entertainment purposes as well as a few good words of wisdom regarding small business.
Ray Daniels Start a Brewery book - goes into the nuts and bolts and is a very good read especially if you're starting a brewpub/micro in the US. I think the people that give it a bad review are expecting to open a book and it has every thing mapped out for them, including dates and times of when to go to the toilet, etc, etc.
I just got Pete Slosbergs "For Pete's Sake" book in the mail and am thinking this will be like Calagione's but with a bit more of a brewery & marketing ideas, etc.
All the best.

Steve Hindy's book on his experiences starting the Brooklyn Brewery is also good in the same sense that Sam's is. A good business book, with a a little brewing flair tossed in (but definitel not a "how to start a brewery" book).
