Citing a lack of demand, Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) in the UK has said that they discontinue selling eight of its cask and three of its draft beer brands by the end of this year.
Carlsberg is the largest brewer of cask ales in the UK.
The move to discontinue a sizable portfolio of traditional and authentic cask beers follows a recent decision to shut down the historic Banks’s Brewery next year as part of a “cost cutting” effort. Next year will mark the brewery’s 150th anniversary. One year ago, Carlsberg announced the closure of famed Ringwood Brewery and move production of the brands such as Old Thumper to other Carlsberg plants.
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) denounced the decision.
The cask ales being discontinued include Eagle IPA, Banks’s Sunbeam, Banks’s Mild, Ringwood Old Thumper, Ringwood Boondoggle, Marston’s 61 Deep, Marston’s Old Empire, and Jennings Cumberland Ale.
