With excess brewing capacity at an all-time high across the globe as beer consumption declines, building a new brewery from the ground up is almost unheard of in the industry. Almost. Greene King has received final approval for its new $49 million brewery in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, UK and construction will begin by the middle of this year.
Greene King, the British pub and brewing company operates 3,100 pubs, restaurants and hotels across the UK. The company dates back to 1799.
The new brewery will replace the historic Westgate Brewery which has brewed beers such as Old Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale for over 200 years.
Construction is expected to start in the middle of this year and be fully operational by mid-2027.
