When Tilray announced the purchase of four craft breweries from Molson Coors a few months ago, no financial terms were released. It has now been announced that the company, originally founded in Canada in 2014 as a cannabis and pharmaceutical company, paid a stunningly low $23 million, or $120 per barrel of annual sales.
The numbers were released in Tilray’s latest SEC filing.
The four breweries; Terrapin, Hop Valley, Revolver and Atwater were acquired by Tilray in August and currently sell about 200 000 barrels of beer combined.
Other examples of craft brewery acquisitions when the segment was growing include the Boston Beer merger with Dogfish Head in 2019 for $300 million or about $1,000 per barrel. The highest amount paid is certainly the Constellation Brands acquisition of Ballast Point in 2015 for $1 billion, the equivalent of $3,600 per barrel.
