News Cans Make Up Nearly Half of All Craft Beer Package Sales in 2020
Cans now make up 44% of all packaged craft beer sales according to an annual packaging study done by Bart Watson, economist at the Brewers Association. The study compared the sales of cans versus bottles in different pack configurations, including 4-pack, 6-pack, 12-pack and loose.

News Innovation in Can Carriers Continues
Can carriers have improved in recent years towards more recyclable options, including what has become the popular overwrap carton for cans. But cans in a box don’t allow consumers to read “canned-on” dates or other info that may be on the can and not the carrier. A new innovation has just been introduced that is a fully recyclable paper can carrier that functions in the same way as the plastic carrier.

News Can Shortage Concerns Grow
Everyone in the industry knows that aluminum beverage cans have been in high demand, even before the virus crisis. With the growing popularity of canned wine and cocktails, combined with booming sales of hard seltzer, the pressure has been on the can manufacturers to increase supply. But when the COVID-19 crisis forced beer out of kegs due to the closure of the on-premise business, most breweries, large and small, pivoted to canning more beer than before to sell into the off-premise.

News Bulk Beer Shipping May Be Next COVID Induced Trend
Although import beer makes up about 20% of the U.S. beer market, almost none of it is packaged here. Instead, the expensive task of shipping bottles, cans and kegs continues to be the norm. But with thousands of kegs “stuck” at closed on-premise businesses, the idea of shipping beer from other countries in bulk and then packaging here in the U.S. may be a trend in the future.

News Finnish develop solution to “exploding” beer bottles & cans
Finnish Scientists hope that instances of exploding bottles and cans of beer will soon be a thing of the past thanks to an innovation that can genetically test for diastatic yeasts. “We don’t have an exact date for when this new technology will be available on the market, but we expect by next year because the test itself is quite straightforward,” said Principal Scientist Brian Gibson

News Pete Coors Takes on Aluminum Tariffs

Pete Coors, in an op-ed column in the Wall Street Journal, gave the thumbs down to President Trumps notion that tariffs can be “avoided.” Coors, vice chairman of the Molson Coors Brewing Co., wrote “according to President Trump, tariffs can be ‘completely avoided if you buy from a non-Tariffed Country, or you buy the product inside the USA (the best idea). That’s Zero Tariffs.’ Unfortunately, this isn’t quite true for anyone buying aluminum. Thanks to manipulative business practices that appear to permeate the industry, it doesn’t matter if you buy from a tariffed company or an American one—you’ll still pay the same high price.”
